Csongrád-Csanád County: how this area actually works
The Tisza and the Maros meet the plain at Szeged. The land is flat to the Serbian and Romanian borders, with Hódmezővásárhely and Makó as the other urban poles. Bács-Kiskun lies west, Békés east, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok north. Serbia and Romania are international borders. Csongrád-Csanád vármegye is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Csongrád-Csanád County.
The university, food industry, and the border define Szeged. Pick-your-own and paprika country is the rest of the county. The old county name Csongrád still appears in foreign articles. The official name since 2020 is Csongrád-Csanád. BV did not rename the prison to match. Szeged matters here because it is the county seat on the Tisza, university city and home of the major BV prison.
Put Nagyfa in the plan for a concrete reason — the other BV site in the county, not a neighbourhood of the Szeged cathedral. Hódmezővásárhely matters here because it is the large plain town just north-east of Szeged. The administrative centre is Szeged. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.
Finding someone held in Csongrád-Csanád County
The county court is in Szeged. Hódmezővásárhely and Makó have their own district weight. Szegedi Fegyház és Börtön is the institution families travel for, and Nagyfa is the other BV name in this county that people mix up with it. A Southern Great Plain tag on a form can mean either, or a later transfer. Name-search sites that scrape court journalism are not the Hungarian Prison Service (Büntetés-végrehajtás, BV). They miss transfers and they invent certainty. Use the official channel.
A first arrest in Csongrád-Csanád County can be followed by a transfer to another county if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. BV moves people between intézetek for security, sentence type, and space. A Budapest arrest is not a promise of a Budapest cell, and Szeged is not only a Csongrád story. Put Makó in the plan for a concrete reason — the onion town toward the Romanian border.
Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the Hungarian Prison Service (Büntetés-végrehajtás, BV), those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.
Visits and family practicalities
Látogatás at Szeged is approved in advance. Nagyfa is not a wing you can walk to from the cathedral. The desk compares your document to the approved list letter by letter. If your booking name and your passport diverge — a missing middle name, a transliteration — fix it before you travel to Szeged. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.
Using a pre-2020 map that says Csongrád and then guessing the town of Csongrád rather than the prison in Szeged. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Szeged, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. Szentes matters here because it is a Tisza town in the north of the county.
Getting around Csongrád-Csanád County
The M5 ends at Szeged from Budapest. The M43 runs toward the Romanian border. City approaches cross the Tisza. Szeged is the end of the Budapest line. International links toward Romania need a separate plan from the prison taxi. Budapest, or Timișoara from the Romanian side. Szeged’s airfield is not the family default.
Plain heat in summer is extreme on foot. Winter fog on the M5 is the other classic delay. Save the gate address in Hungarian as well as English, and carry a paper copy.
