Heves County: how this area actually works
The Mátra is Hungary’s highest range, the Bükk touches the east, and the south falls to the plain toward the Tisza. Nógrád and Borsod lie north, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok south, Pest west. Heves vármegye is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Heves County.
Tourism in Eger, forestry and resorts in the Mátra, and industry in Hatvan and Gyöngyös on the Budapest side. Wine-cellar English is better than prison-desk English. Do not confuse the two. People heading for Eger still need Eger on the list: the county seat, baroque valley city, and local BV town.
Gyöngyös is the Mátra gateway on the M3 side. People heading for Eger still need Hatvan on the list: the western rail and motorway town toward Budapest. The administrative centre is Eger. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.
Finding someone held in Heves County
The county court is in Eger. Gyöngyös and Hatvan carry much of the county’s everyday urban business. Eger’s BV institution is the local address. People are transferred to Márianosztra, Balassagyarmat, Budapest, or elsewhere when classification says so. A valley hotel in Eger is only right if the papers agree. There is no public roster you can query on bv.gov.hu. Placement is an administrative fact, released to the people entitled to it, not a webpage.
A first arrest in Heves County can be followed by a transfer to another county if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. BV moves people between intézetek for security, sentence type, and space. A Budapest arrest is not a promise of a Budapest cell, and Szeged is not only a Csongrád story. Parád is a small Mátra spa settlement, not a custody site.
Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the Hungarian Prison Service (Büntetés-végrehajtás, BV), those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.
Visits and family practicalities
Látogatás rules are the intézet’s, not the castle museum’s. Children do not bypass identification rules. Check the age and accompaniment conditions on the official page for the specific institution, because they are not uniform across Heves County. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.
Pairing a wine weekend with an unconfirmed visit. Approval does not flex around a tasting booking. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Eger, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. People heading for Eger still need Heves on the list: the plain town that shares the county’s name and is not the capital.
Getting around Heves County
The M3 passes the southern edge at Hatvan and Gyöngyös. Eger itself is off the motorway, a deliberate extra leg. Eger is on a branch, not the main Budapest–Miskolc line. Füzesabony is the junction people use. Budapest Airport is close by Hungarian standards, which tempts same-day plans that the approval process will not support.
Mátra snow and Eger festival crowds are separate reasons to add an hour. Save the gate address in Hungarian as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Eger.
