Nógrád County: how this area actually works
The Cserhát hills and the Ipoly river along the Slovak border. Villages are close to the border and far from a motorway. Slovakia north, Pest south, Heves east, Borsod at the corner. Nógrád vármegye is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Nógrád County.
A post-mining economy, small industry, and border trade. Public transport thins out after the last town bus. The Palóc identity is real locally and invisible to BV classification. In Nógrád County, Salgótarján is the county seat in the former mining valley.
Balassagyarmat is easy to misread from a distance. Locally it is the Ipoly town whose BV prison is the county’s national name. In Nógrád County, Szécsény is a small historic town west of the seat. The administrative centre is Salgótarján. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.
Finding someone held in Nógrád County
Salgótarján is the county seat. Balassagyarmat is the other historic centre and the prison town. Balassagyarmat’s BV institution is the custody fact of this county. Márianosztra, just over the line in Pest County, is another famous northern prison and not the same gate. Salgótarján is the court capital. There is no public roster you can query on bv.gov.hu. Placement is an administrative fact, released to the people entitled to it, not a webpage.
A first arrest in Nógrád County can be followed by a transfer to another county if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. BV moves people between intézetek for security, sentence type, and space. A Budapest arrest is not a promise of a Budapest cell, and Szeged is not only a Csongrád story. Pásztó is easy to misread from a distance. Locally it is a town on the southern side toward the Mátra.
Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the Hungarian Prison Service (Büntetés-végrehajtás, BV), those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.
Visits and family practicalities
Látogatás at Balassagyarmat is its own approval. Do not arrive at Márianosztra with the wrong paper. The desk compares your document to the approved list letter by letter. If your booking name and your passport diverge — a missing middle name, a transliteration — fix it before you travel to Salgótarján. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.
Confusing the two northern prison towns because both sit near the Börzsöny and the Slovak border. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Salgótarján, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. In Nógrád County, Hollókő is the UNESCO village, a visit for architecture and not for custody.
Getting around Nógrád County
There is no motorway through the heart of the county. Roads from Vác and from the M3 via Hatvan are the realistic approaches. Branch lines reach Salgótarján and Balassagyarmat. Timetables are sparse on Sundays. Budapest Airport, then a slow second half. Leave more time than the kilometre count suggests.
Ipoly valley fog and Sunday bus gaps. A missed connection here is not fixed by the next train in ten minutes. Save the gate address in Hungarian as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Salgótarján.
