Hajdú-Bihar County: how this area actually works
Flat Hajdúság farmland, the Hortobágy edge to the west, and sandy country toward the Romanian border at Ártánd. Szabolcs lies north, Borsod and Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok west, Békés south. Romania is east. Hajdú-Bihar vármegye is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Hajdú-Bihar County.
Debrecen’s university, pharma, and services dominate. The rest of the county is agriculture and small towns. The city’s civic pride does not extend to publishing a prisoner list. BV does not either. In Hajdú-Bihar County, Debrecen is the county seat, university city, and BV town of the Hajdúság.
Hajdúszoboszló is easy to misread from a distance. Locally it is the spa town west of Debrecen, a hotel temptation and not a prison. In Hajdú-Bihar County, Hortobágy is the pushta landscape on the county’s western edge. The administrative centre is Debrecen. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.

Debrecen Airport has some international flights. Budapest remains the fallback. Either way, confirm the gate before the ticket.
Summer storms on the plain and winter fog. The land looks easy and is not fast when the weather sits down. Save the gate address in Hungarian as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Debrecen.
