Somogy County: how this area actually works
Balaton’s south shore, the Somogy hills, and the Drava forests on the Croatian border. North-south distances surprise people who only know the lake road. Veszprém and Fejér lie north, Tolna and Baranya east and south, Zala west. Croatia is across the Drava. Somogy vármegye is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Somogy County.
Summer tourism on the lake, agriculture inland, and Kaposvár’s services. August traffic on the south shore is not the county’s normal speed. Holiday English on the beach does not extend to a Kaposvár visit list. Kaposvár is easy to misread from a distance. Locally it is the inland county seat and BV town.
In Somogy County, Siófok is the largest south-shore resort, not the prison. Marcali is easy to misread from a distance. Locally it is a town between the lake and the western hills. The administrative centre is Kaposvár. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.
Finding someone held in Somogy County
The county court is in Kaposvár. Siófok and Marcali handle a lot of seasonal population and are not the prison. Kaposvár’s BV institution is the local fact. Transfers to Baracska, Pécs, or national sites happen. A balcony in Siófok is a holiday, not a strategy. The Hungarian Prison Service (Büntetés-végrehajtás, BV) does not publish a searchable inmate index. Guessing from news headlines or a shared surname will send you to the wrong gate.
A first arrest in Somogy County can be followed by a transfer to another county if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. The M7 runs along the lake side. Kaposvár is south of it, on trunk roads through the hills. Kaposvár has rail links toward Budapest via Dombóvár and toward the lake. Sunday frequencies drop. Budapest, or sometimes a small arrival elsewhere, then the M7 and a second leg inland.
July and August reshape the northern roads. The visit does not move to match the beach traffic. Save the gate address in Hungarian as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Kaposvár.
