Vas County: how this area actually works
The Alpine foothills, the Őrség forests in the south, and a plain opening east toward the Rába. Austria is a few minutes from parts of the border. Austria west, Győr-Moson-Sopron north, Veszprém east, Zala south. Vas vármegye is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Vas County.
Szombathely’s industry and services, cross-border work, and village tourism in the Őrség. German is useful in shops and useless as a way through BV rules. Szombathely is the county seat and BV town on the western plain.
People heading for Szombathely still need Kőszeg on the list: the castle town in the hills against the Austrian border. Sárvár is the spa town east of the seat. The administrative centre is Szombathely. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.
Finding someone held in Vas County
The county court is in Szombathely. Sárvár and Körmend are the other centres. Szombathely’s BV prison is the local institution. Austrian facilities across the border are a different legal system. A Vas arrest stays inside Hungarian placement until BV says otherwise. The Hungarian Prison Service (Büntetés-végrehajtás, BV) does not publish a searchable inmate index. Guessing from news headlines or a shared surname will send you to the wrong gate.
A first arrest in Vas County can be followed by a transfer to another county if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. BV moves people between intézetek for security, sentence type, and space. A Budapest arrest is not a promise of a Budapest cell, and Szeged is not only a Csongrád story. People heading for Szombathely still need Körmend on the list: a southern town on the road toward Zala.
Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the Hungarian Prison Service (Büntetés-végrehajtás, BV), those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.
Visits and family practicalities
Látogatás is a Hungarian approval. An Austrian driving licence does not shorten it. The desk compares your document to the approved list letter by letter. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Szombathely. Austria is the everyday neighbour. Hungarian BV and Austrian Justizanstalten do not share a visiting room.
