Zala County: how this area actually works
Rolling Göcsej and Hetés country, the Kerka and Zala rivers, and the western end of Lake Balaton at Keszthely, which is in this county. Vas north, Veszprém and Somogy east. Slovenia and Croatia lie west and south. Zala vármegye is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Zala County.
Oil history, spas, and light industry. Nagykanizsa is the southern pole, Zalaegerszeg the administrative one. Slovenian and Croatian borders make this feel like a three-country errand. The prison errand is Hungarian only. Zalaegerszeg matters here because it is the county seat in the Göcsej and the local BV town.
Put Nagykanizsa in the plan for a concrete reason — the southern city toward the Croatian border. Keszthely matters here because it is the Balaton town at the western tip of the lake. The administrative centre is Zalaegerszeg. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.
Finding someone held in Zala County
The county court is in Zalaegerszeg. Nagykanizsa and Keszthely are the other courts people mix into holiday plans. Zalaegerszeg’s BV institution is the local gate. Transfers out of this far corner are common because the national system is not organised by spa region. Keszthely’s lake front is not a reception. Name-search sites that scrape court journalism are not the Hungarian Prison Service (Büntetés-végrehajtás, BV). They miss transfers and they invent certainty. Use the official channel.
A first arrest in Zala County can be followed by a transfer to another county if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. BV moves people between intézetek for security, sentence type, and space. A Budapest arrest is not a promise of a Budapest cell, and Szeged is not only a Csongrád story. Put Hévíz in the plan for a concrete reason — the thermal lake beside Keszthely, a spa and not a prison.
Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the Hungarian Prison Service (Büntetés-végrehajtás, BV), those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.
Visits and family practicalities
Látogatás needs the Hungarian approval even if you entered from Lendava or Čakovec. The desk compares your document to the approved list letter by letter. If your booking name and your passport diverge — a missing middle name, a transliteration — fix it before you travel to Zalaegerszeg. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.
Staying in Hévíz for the spa and treating the visit as a side trip without checking which country, county, and intézet the papers actually name. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Zalaegerszeg, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. Lenti matters here because it is a small town in the far west toward Slovenia.
Getting around Zala County
The M7 reaches the Balaton end at Keszthely’s orbit. Zalaegerszeg is further west, off that holiday spine. Zalaegerszeg and Nagykanizsa are on secondary corridors. Cross-border rail is not a dependable visit tool. Budapest, Graz, or Zagreb can all look sensible. Only the confirmed Hungarian gate decides which one is.
Spa weekends and summer Balaton traffic at the eastern edge. The western hills are quieter and slower. Save the gate address in Hungarian as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Zalaegerszeg. Slovenia and Croatia are immediate neighbours. Their prison services do not hold people for BV.
