North East England prisons: visits and locating someone

The North East is Northumberland, County Durham, Tyne and Wear and the Tees valley. Durham and Frankland dominate searches. Newcastle is the travel hub, not the only gate. HMPPS runs the estate. There is no public inmate list, and Find a prisoner confirms a location only with consent.

North East: how this area actually works

Durham's compact local, beside the cathedral city, is the jail families photograph from the train and still have to approach correctly. Frankland, north of the city at Brasside, is the dispersal prison. Low Newton, on the same access road, holds women. They are neighbours and not the same visit. Holme House at Stockton takes Teesside courts. Deerbolt, at Barnard Castle, is a young-person site in Teesdale, not a Newcastle local. HMP Northumberland, on the coast around the old Acklington and Castington sites, is a long rural trip and is not 'Newcastle prison'. Kirklevington Grange is an open prison near Yarm. Mixing those names is the standard family mistake.

The region's borders are sharp. South of the Tees is Yorkshire: Holme House is not Hull, and Frankland is not Full Sutton. North of Berwick is Scotland, and a Newcastle warrant does not put someone in Barlinnie or Edinburgh under the Scottish Prison Service. GOV.UK Find a prisoner covers this English region. It does not cover SPS. A full estate in Durham can still push a Teesside remand to Yorkshire or the North West. Category, not the family's postcode in Gateshead or Middlesbrough, decides. Berwick is not a prison gate for either service.

Remand at Durham or Holme House can be followed by a move to Frankland, Northumberland, Kirklevington Grange or another region. Women's visits focus on Low Newton and can also leave the North East. Youth custody at Deerbolt is not an adult booking. High-security process at Frankland is not a Durham local visit and not an open visit at Kirklevington. This page groups prisons recorded as North East. It does not name the people inside them. Newcastle, Durham, Stockton and the Northumberland coast are four different plans. Confirm which one the letter names.

Finding someone held in North East

There is no public roll for Durham, Frankland, Low Newton, Holme House, Deerbolt, Northumberland or Kirklevington Grange. Use GOV.UK Find a prisoner with name and date of birth. HMPPS answers only if the prisoner consents. A magistrates' day in Newcastle or Middlesbrough may not appear until the next working day. Do not ring Brasside or the Durham gate for a name. A social post is not a location. Frankland and Low Newton will not confirm a stranger's name at Brasside.

Letters and payments need the prison number after the prison is confirmed. Frankland is not Low Newton, even on the same road north of Durham. Holme House is not Durham city. HMP Northumberland is not a metro jail. If the result later says Full Sutton, Armley or a Scottish establishment, stop using this region's travel plan. SPS jails are a different service. Ask the solicitor which van left the Teesside or Newcastle court. Deerbolt and Kirklevington Grange are not city locals.

Visits and family practicalities

Book through the national visits route once you are on the list. Frankland's high-security sessions are not Durham's, and Low Newton's women's visits are not Holme House. Open conditions at Kirklevington Grange are different again. Days are on each GOV.UK page. This guide does not invent them.

Bring the identification HMPPS lists. Phones stay outside. A booking for Durham will not get you into Frankland. If the person moved to the Northumberland coast or to Yorkshire overnight, the old slot fails. Re-check before you leave Newcastle, Darlington or Middlesbrough.

Getting around North East

Newcastle, Durham, Darlington and Middlesbrough or Thornaby are the rail heads. Durham station is not the prison gate, and it is certainly not Frankland. Brasside, for Frankland and Low Newton, is a road north of the city. Follow the visit letter so you do not join the wrong queue. Holme House is a Stockton trip. HMP Northumberland is a rural coastal leg from the A1. Deerbolt needs Barnard Castle.

Drivers should not treat the A1 as the front door. The A19 serves Teesside. Winter weather on the Northumberland coast and on the A66 toward Barnard Castle matters. Parking at Durham's local is tight. Newcastle Airport is a start, not a gate. Use the official postcode rather than a pin labelled with a closed camp name.

Questions families actually ask

Can I look up who is in Durham or Frankland?
No. North East prisons have no public roll. GOV.UK Find a prisoner may confirm one location with the prisoner's consent. It will not describe a wing at Frankland or Durham.
Are Frankland and Low Newton the same prison?
No. They share the Brasside area north of Durham. Frankland is the high-security men's prison. Low Newton holds women. The visit letter names only one gate.
Does GOV.UK Find a prisoner cover Scottish jails too?
It covers England and Wales, including Durham, Frankland and Holme House. It does not cover the Scottish Prison Service. A move north of the border is a different enquiry.
