North West England prisons: visits and locating someone

The North West is Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Cheshire, Lancashire and Cumbria. Manchester and Liverpool dominate family searches, then the map runs to Preston, Lancaster and the Cumbrian coast. HMPPS holds people here. There is no public inmate list. Consent is required before Find a prisoner will name a gate.

North West: how this area actually works

HMP Manchester, still called Strangeways, is the high-security local for Greater Manchester courts. Forest Bank in Salford and Altcourse at Fazakerley in Liverpool are large contracted locals that take pressure off the Victorian houses. HMP Liverpool remains the city jail families mean when they are not talking about Altcourse. Risley, in Cheshire, sits on the Manchester-Liverpool corridor. Styal, at Wilmslow, is the women's closed prison for the north-west. Hindley, Buckley Hall, Wymott, Garth and Kirkham spread across Lancashire, with Lancaster Farms and Preston serving the north of the county. Haverigg, on the Cumbrian coast near Millom, wrecks any plan that assumed Manchester was the whole region.

Cheshire is the border problem. A Chester or Warrington family can be sent to Risley, to Styal, or across into Wales at Berwyn in Wrexham. Berwyn is not a North West prison. Carlisle looks north to Scotland, but a Carlisle warrant is still England and Wales, not the Scottish Prison Service. The Pennines are the other edge: Leeds and Frankland are not Manchester bookings. Salford and Manchester are not one gate even when the tram line makes them feel close. Read the result before you pick Piccadilly or Lime Street.

Remand at Strangeways, Forest Bank, Liverpool or Altcourse is often only the start. HMPPS moves people to Wymott, Garth, Kirkham, Styal or out of the region. Women's places concentrate at Styal and can still be elsewhere in England. Youth and open regimes at Lancaster Farms or Thorn Cross are not adult local visits. This page groups prisons recorded as North West. It is not a list of people in Strangeways, Walton or Fazakerley, and a nickname is not a location check. Preston, Lancaster and Millom are separate days from Manchester.

Finding someone held in North West

Manchester, Liverpool, Salford, Cheshire, Lancashire and Cumbria do not publish a custody roll. Use GOV.UK Find a prisoner. HMPPS needs the name, the date of birth and the prisoner's consent. A remand from Manchester Crown Court or Liverpool may not show the same day. Do not ask Strangeways or Altcourse to read names down the phone. A local post about Forest Bank is not official. Strangeways, Altcourse and Styal will not read a nominal roll to a caller. Wait for the consent check.

Get the prison number before letters or payments. Strangeways is not Forest Bank. Altcourse is not HMP Liverpool. Styal is not Risley. Haverigg is not Lancaster Farms. If the result changes to Berwyn, Leeds or Durham, you have left the North West or entered Wales. The solicitor knows the first van. Run Find a prisoner again after any move. Cheshire, Lancashire and the Cumbrian coast are not one Manchester day. Match the town named on the letter before you buy the ticket.

Visits and family practicalities

Book through the national route once you are listed. A Strangeways visit is not a Styal visit, and Kirkham's open regime is not Garth or Wymott. Each jail's days are on its GOV.UK page. This guide does not invent a timetable for Liverpool or Preston.

Photographic ID is required. Phones stay outside. Altcourse and HMP Liverpool are both on Merseyside and still will not honour each other's bookings. If the person moved to Cheshire or Cumbria overnight, the Manchester slot is useless. Re-check before you leave Piccadilly or Lime Street.

Getting around North West

Manchester Piccadilly and Victoria, Liverpool Lime Street and Preston are the hubs. Strangeways is a short, unpleasant hop from Victoria, not a sightseeing walk. Forest Bank is Salford. Altcourse is Fazakerley, not the city centre. Styal is a Wilmslow trip. Haverigg wants a car from Millom. Lancaster Farms is not Lancaster Castle.

Drivers use the M6, M62 and M56, then a last mile of permit parking and industrial estates. Cumbrian weather and the coast road to Haverigg need slack. The Welsh border at Wrexham is a different service page if the result says Berwyn. Use the official postcode, not a nickname pin.

Questions families actually ask

Is there a public list for Manchester and Liverpool prisons?
No. Strangeways, Forest Bank, Altcourse, HMP Liverpool and Styal are HMPPS. GOV.UK Find a prisoner confirms a location only with consent. It will not list a wing.
Is Altcourse the same jail as HMP Liverpool?
No. Altcourse is at Fazakerley. HMP Liverpool is a different establishment. Forest Bank is in Salford. The visit letter names one of them. The others will turn you away.
Can a North West case be held in Wales?
Yes. Berwyn at Wrexham is a Welsh HMPPS prison, not a Manchester jail. Chester-area families should read the official result before assuming Risley or Styal.
