West Midlands prison guide: visits and locating a prisoner

The West Midlands is Birmingham and the Black Country, plus Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Shropshire. HMP Birmingham is the local people mean. Long Lartin is the high-security outlier in the Worcestershire fields. There is no public inmate list. Find a prisoner on GOV.UK needs the prisoner's consent.

West Midlands: how this area actually works

Birmingham's local prison, still widely called Winson Green, takes the city court run and has moved between public and contracted operation without becoming a different address. Brinsford, Featherstone, Oakwood and Swinfen Hall form a cluster east of Wolverhampton that families constantly mix up. Stafford is its own city jail. Drake Hall, in Staffordshire countryside, holds women. Hewell, near Redditch, replaced older Worcestershire sites and still answers searches for 'Redditch prison'. Stoke Heath sits toward Shropshire. Werrington holds young people. Long Lartin, near Evesham, is Category A capable. A casual Midlands day trip is the wrong model for that gate.

The county split matters more than the phrase West Midlands. A Coventry or Warwick case is not automatically Hewell. A Shrewsbury or Telford case is not automatically Stoke Heath, and it is not Berwyn in Wrexham, which is Wales. Onley and Rye Hill sit near Rugby and are often claimed by both Midlands regions. Follow the region on the prison record, not the motorway you used. Herefordshire looks toward Wales on a map and still feeds English jails when HMPPS says so. Follow the visit letter, not the county you drove from.

Remand at Birmingham can be followed by a move to Oakwood, Featherstone, Hewell, Long Lartin or a jail outside the region in Yorkshire or the East Midlands. Women's visits concentrate on Drake Hall for many local families and can also leave the region. Youth custody at Brinsford or Werrington is not an adult booking at Birmingham. High-security process at Long Lartin is not a Stafford local visit. This page groups prisons recorded as West Midlands. It does not list who is held in Winson Green, Oakwood or anywhere else. Birmingham is only the remand starting point.

Finding someone held in West Midlands

There is no public roll for Birmingham, Oakwood, Hewell, Stafford, Drake Hall, Long Lartin, Brinsford or Stoke Heath. Use GOV.UK Find a prisoner. Consent, name and date of birth are required, and a same-day remand from Birmingham Crown Court may not show until tomorrow. Do not ask the Winson Green switchboard to search a name. A neighbourhood post about Featherstone is not an official location. HMPPS will not read names from Winson Green, Oakwood or Long Lartin down the phone. Wait until reception has finished the record.

Prison number first, then letters and payments. Oakwood, Featherstone and Brinsford share a corridor east of Wolverhampton and are still three bookings. Hewell is not Long Lartin. Drake Hall is not Stafford. If the result changes to Leicester, Nottingham or Berwyn, you are leaving this region or entering Wales. Ask the solicitor which gate took the van before you send relatives to Redditch or Evesham. Stoke Heath, Drake Hall and Stafford are three different journeys, and a Wolverhampton pin will not sort them.

Visits and family practicalities

Book on the national service after you are on the list. Long Lartin's visit process is not Birmingham's, and Drake Hall's women's visits are not Oakwood's. Each GOV.UK page carries the days. This guide will not invent a grid for Hewell or Stafford.

Bring the ID HMPPS specifies. Phones do not go into the hall. A slot for Featherstone will not open Brinsford next door. If the person moved overnight, the booking dies with the old gate. Re-check before you commit to New Street, Wolverhampton or a taxi from Evesham.

Getting around West Midlands

Birmingham New Street is the interchange, not the prison. Winson Green is a bus or taxi from the city. The Wolverhampton-east cluster needs the right gate name or you will stand at the wrong car park. Hewell is a Redditch trip. Long Lartin is Evesham or Honeybourne plus a taxi through Worcestershire lanes. Drake Hall is a Staffordshire rural leg.

Drivers use the M6, M5 and M42, then regret the last mile. Parking at Birmingham's local is poor. Shropshire visits can mean a longer cross-country ride from Telford or Shrewsbury. Use the official postcode. Do not follow a pin that still points at a closed Worcestershire site replaced by Hewell.
