Northern Ireland prisons: NIPS visits and locating someone

Northern Ireland's prisons are run by the Northern Ireland Prison Service, not by HMPPS and not by the Scottish Prison Service. The working estate families meet is Maghaberry, Magilligan and Hydebank Wood. NIPS does not publish a list of people in custody, and the England-and-Wales Find a prisoner form does not cover these gates.

Northern Ireland: how this area actually works

Belfast is the capital and the court centre most families travel through, but the adult men's prison is Maghaberry, outside Lisburn in County Antrim, not a jail in the city centre. Maghaberry holds sentenced and remand men, including separated landings that still shape how some visits are organised. Hydebank Wood, on the south side of Belfast, holds women and young people. Magilligan sits on the north coast in County Londonderry, near Limavady, and is a different day from a Belfast visit. Those three operational prisons are the NIPS estate people mean. The Maze is closed history, not a visiting address.

The legal system is separate again from England and Wales and from Scotland. A remand at Laganside or a Crown Court sitting in Belfast does not appear on GOV.UK Find a prisoner. County Antrim and County Londonderry are the record labels this site uses so Maghaberry and Magilligan group correctly. Belfast is the label for Hydebank Wood. Lisburn, Limavady and south Belfast are three different journeys even when people say the person is simply in Belfast. None of those labels is a searchable nominal roll. The Department of Justice publishes NIPS contact routes on justice-ni.gov.uk. That is the official door.

Because the estate is small, category and space can still send someone between Maghaberry, Magilligan and Hydebank, or keep them longer at Maghaberry than a family in Derry expected. Cross-border confusion with Ireland is the other standing mistake. Mountjoy and the Irish Prison Service are a different state, with different forms. A person arrested in Newry or Enniskillen is not automatically in Dublin, and a person arrested in Dundalk is not automatically in Lisburn. Confirm the jurisdiction before you book a flight into Belfast or Dublin. The solicitor in Belfast is the person who can separate those stories.

Finding someone held in Northern Ireland

There is no public prisoner list for Maghaberry, Magilligan or Hydebank Wood. Use the Northern Ireland Prison Service enquiry routes published on justice-ni.gov.uk, or the solicitor on the case. Do not send the name through GOV.UK Find a prisoner and do not use the Scottish Prison Service form. A weekend remand in Belfast may not be confirmed until the next working day. Maghaberry, Magilligan and Hydebank Wood will not confirm a stranger's name at the gate. Use the published NIPS route after reception has finished.

If papers already name Magilligan, the visit is on the north coast in County Londonderry, not at Hydebank in Belfast. If they name Maghaberry, go to Lisburn's hinterland in County Antrim. Police custody in a station is not the same as a NIPS hall. A social-media claim about separated houses inside Maghaberry is not a location check. Ask the official route, and keep the prison number once you have it for letters. Post aimed at the wrong house in Lisburn, Limavady or Belfast does not become a visit plan.

Visits and family practicalities

NIPS books visits establishment by establishment. Maghaberry, Magilligan and Hydebank Wood do not share one public timetable, and this guide will not invent one. You need to be an approved visitor. Read the live NIPS instructions before you leave Belfast, Derry or Dublin.

Identification rules are enforced at all three gates. A visit approved for Hydebank's women or young people is not a Maghaberry visit. Children as visitors follow the house rules in force that month. If a slot is withdrawn, only NIPS can replace it. Do not arrive at Lisburn because a relative said the person was 'in Belfast somewhere'.

Getting around Northern Ireland

Belfast International and George Best Belfast City Airport are the usual air arrivals. The Enterprise train from Dublin stops in Belfast, not at Maghaberry and not at Magilligan. Lisburn is the rail town for Maghaberry, with a further road leg. Magilligan is a long coastal drive toward Limavady. Hydebank is a south-Belfast bus or taxi.

Drivers from Derry and County Londonderry should treat Maghaberry as a cross-province trip, not a local call. The A1 and M1 from the border are for Belfast, then you still need the Lisburn road. Winter closures on the north coast matter for Magilligan. Parking is limited. Follow the NIPS approach note for that gate.
