South West: how this area actually works
Bristol, at Horfield, is the city reception jail for a wide court catchment. Gloucestershire adds Eastwood Park, the women's closed prison that also serves families far into Wales, and Leyhill, the open prison nearby. Ashfield, in the same county, is a young-person site and not the adult local. Wiltshire has Erlestoke. Dorset has Guys Marsh, Portland and The Verne on the island of Portland. Somerset and Devon feed Exeter and Channings Wood. Dartmoor at Princetown is still a moorland logistics problem, not 'a bit past Bristol'. Cornwall's courts can send people hours east before anyone in Penzance has a visiting address.
The peninsula does not behave like the South East's commuter ring. A Plymouth family and a Swindon family are not on the same day-return pattern. The M5 and M4 meet around Bristol, which makes Horfield look central on a map and still leaves Dartmoor, Exeter and Portland as separate expeditions. The Severn crossings put south Wales within reach of Eastwood Park, so a Cardiff relative may be visiting Gloucestershire, not HMP Cardiff. That is an HMPPS allocation, not a choice the family can book. Swindon and Plymouth are not the same day trip.
Category and space move people out of the region as well as into it. A Bristol remand can later sit on the Isle of Wight, in the Midlands, or on the moor. Women's places concentrate at Eastwood Park for a huge catchment, which is why a woman from Cornwall may not be near Truro. Open conditions at Leyhill are not closed conditions at The Verne or Dartmoor. This page groups prisons recorded as South West. It is a geography guide, not a nominal roll of Horfield, Princetown or Portland. Read the named establishment's page before you travel from Bristol.
Finding someone held in South West
There is no public list for Bristol, Exeter, Dartmoor, Channings Wood, Eastwood Park, Leyhill, Erlestoke, Guys Marsh, Portland or The Verne. Use GOV.UK Find a prisoner with name and date of birth. HMPPS speaks only if the prisoner consents. A remand from Bristol, Exeter or Truro may sit in reception overnight. Do not mine local Facebook groups for a wing. A miss is not evidence the person is free somewhere in Devon. Staff will not read out a landing at Horfield or Princetown.
The prison number, once you have it, is what letters and payments need. Bristol is not Ashfield, and Eastwood Park is not Leyhill, though they sit in the same county. Portland and The Verne share an island and still are not one booking. If a later search puts the person in Wales or the South East, stop planning a Temple Meads day. Ask the solicitor at the Crown Court before you tell relatives which moor or which causeway to drive.
Visits and family practicalities
Each South West establishment publishes its own visit days on GOV.UK. A Horfield slot is not a Dartmoor slot, and an open visit at Leyhill is not a women's visit at Eastwood Park. Book only after you are on the list. This page does not copy a timetable for Exeter or Portland.
Take the identification HMPPS lists, and leave phones outside. Weather on Dartmoor and traffic on the Portland causeway will not extend a session. If the person moved from Exeter to Channings Wood, or from Bristol to another region, the old booking fails. Re-check the morning you leave Plymouth, Swindon or Cardiff.
Getting around South West
Bristol Temple Meads, Exeter St Davids, Plymouth, Truro and Bournemouth are the rail heads. Horfield is a Bristol bus, not the station door. Dartmoor means a bus or taxi toward Princetown that does not match every visit end time. Portland and The Verne need the causeway. Erlestoke and Channings Wood are rural legs after the train.
Drivers should treat the A30 and the M5 as the spine and still add the last miles. Summer traffic to Cornwall and winter fog on the moor both wipe out a tight connection. Parking at Bristol and Exeter locals is poor. Use the GOV.UK postcode. Do not follow a pin that confuses The Verne with a tourist viewpoint on Portland.
