Scotland prison guide: SPS visits and locating a prisoner

Scotland runs its own prisons through the Scottish Prison Service, under Scots law, not through HMPPS in England and Wales. Edinburgh and Glasgow dominate the Central Belt, but the estate reaches Aberdeen, Inverness and Dumfries. SPS does not publish a list of people in custody, and GOV.UK Find a prisoner does not cover these gates.

Scotland: how this area actually works

A sheriff court in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee or Aberdeen is not a Crown Court in England, and the prison that follows is not an HMPPS local. Barlinnie at Riddrie is the crowded Glasgow house families mean by a Strathclyde remand. Edinburgh's prison at Saughton serves Lothian. Low Moss at Bishopbriggs sits in East Dunbartonshire. Addiewell is in West Lothian. Kilmarnock serves Ayrshire. Greenock is Inverclyde. Shotts is the Lanarkshire high-security name. Those council-area labels on prison records are how this site groups Scottish houses. They are not a public nominal roll.

North of the Central Belt the distances change. Perth and Castle Huntly country sit in Tayside. Glenochil and Stirling serve the Forth valley, with Polmont near Falkirk holding young people and Stirling holding women. Grampian at Peterhead covers the north-east. Inverness is the Highland gate. Dumfries serves Dumfries and Galloway on the Solway. Island communities in the Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland do not have their own SPS prisons. People are held on the mainland. A same-day return from Stornoway or Lerwick is rarely realistic. Perth and Inverness are not interchangeable stations for a Tayside or Highland visit.

SPS decides placement by security, sentence and space, not by which town the family would prefer. A Glasgow arrest can move to Shotts, Addiewell or the north after classification. Contracted prisons have operated inside SPS rules at points in the estate's history, but the enquiry route is still Scottish. HM Inspectorate of Prisons for Scotland writes about conditions. Those reports are not a list of who is on which landing. If a relative insists the person is in England, that is a different service and a different legal system. Carlisle is not Glasgow.

Finding someone held in Scotland

Do not use GOV.UK Find a prisoner for Barlinnie, Edinburgh, Perth, Grampian or any other Scottish jail. That form is the HMPPS tool for England and Wales. Scotland handles family enquiries through the Scottish Prison Service under Scottish data-protection rules, and it does not offer an open web search by name. The solicitor instructed at the sheriff court is often the first person who can say which establishment took the prisoner. Quote the house if a letter already names Barlinnie, Edinburgh, Perth or Grampian.

Police custody in a Glasgow or Edinburgh station is not the same as an SPS hall. If the person has already moved from Barlinnie to Shotts, or from a Tayside court to Glenochil, the first address is stale. Ask SPS using the route it publishes, and quote any prison number already on a letter. A social post naming Riddrie or Saughton is not confirmation. Dumfries, Inverness and Peterhead are easy to mix up if you only know the town of arrest.

Visits and family practicalities

SPS visit booking is not the England-and-Wales national line. Each establishment, from Polmont and Stirling to Greenock and Kilmarnock, publishes its own visitor instructions. Remand and sentenced regimes differ. This page does not invent session times for Barlinnie or Edinburgh. Read the live SPS page for that house before you leave.

You need to be an approved visitor and to bring the identification SPS asks for. A visit booked at Low Moss will not get you into Addiewell or Shotts. Women's visits at Stirling and young-person visits at Polmont follow their own rules. If the slot is cancelled, only that establishment can rebook it. Do not turn up at the gate in Riddrie on the strength of a text.

Getting around Scotland

Glasgow Central, Queen Street and Edinburgh Waverley are the rail hubs. Barlinnie is a Riddrie bus or taxi, not a station-side jail. Edinburgh's prison is in the west of the city, not at the castle. Aberdeen, Inverness and Dumfries are longer rides. A morning slot at Grampian or Inverness often means a night in Peterhead or the Highland capital.

Drivers crossing from Carlisle into Dumfries and Galloway, or up the A9 toward Inverness, should treat weather as part of the plan. Ferries from the islands add another day. Parking at Glasgow and Edinburgh houses is tight. Follow the establishment's approach notes rather than a pin dropped on the wrong side of the wall.

Questions families actually ask

Can I use GOV.UK Find a prisoner for a Scottish jail?
No. Barlinnie, Edinburgh, Perth, Shotts, Grampian and the rest are Scottish Prison Service establishments. Families use SPS enquiry routes. Scotland does not publish an inmate list.
Will a Glasgow case stay at Barlinnie in Riddrie?
Remand often starts there, but SPS can move people to Shotts, Low Moss, Addiewell, Kilmarnock or further north. Confirm the establishment before you book travel to Glasgow.
Who publishes visit times in Scotland?
The Scottish Prison Service page for that establishment, such as Edinburgh, Polmont or Inverness. Times change. This national guide does not copy a weekly grid or a phone queue.
