Yorkshire prisons guide: visits and locating a prisoner

Yorkshire's prison map runs from Leeds and Sheffield to Hull, York and the high-security houses at Wakefield and Full Sutton. HMPPS holds people here under England-and-Wales rules. There is no public inmate list. GOV.UK Find a prisoner confirms a location only with the prisoner's consent.

Yorkshire: how this area actually works

Leeds, still called Armley by almost everyone who has to visit, is the Victorian local for West Yorkshire courts. Hull takes the East Riding and the city. Doncaster is a contracted local on the rail triangle. New Hall at Flockton is the women's closed prison for a wide northern catchment. Askham Grange, near York, is an open women's prison and not New Hall. Wealstun, Hatfield, Lindholme and Moorland fill the training and specialist map across West and South Yorkshire. Wetherby holds young people. Humber and Millsike sit on the Holderness side of Hull and are not a city-centre walk from the station.

Wakefield and Full Sutton are the names that dominate national searches, and they are not Armley. Full Sutton, east of York, is a dispersal prison. Wakefield is the high-security jail south of the city, not a casual visit between trains at Westgate. Families who say 'York prison' may mean Full Sutton, Askham Grange or somewhere else entirely. Sheffield searches collide with Doncaster and with South Yorkshire houses that are not in the city centre. The North East begins at the Tees: Frankland and Durham are not Yorkshire bookings. Lincoln and the East Midlands are the other border people cross by mistake.

A remand at Armley, Hull or Doncaster can move to Wealstun, Wakefield, Full Sutton or out of Yorkshire altogether. Women's journeys split between New Hall and Askham Grange and can also leave the region. Youth custody at Wetherby is a separate gate. High-security process at Full Sutton or Wakefield is not a local visit in Leeds. HMPPS decides. This page groups prisons recorded as Yorkshire. It does not list people at Armley, Hull, Doncaster or anywhere else, and a tabloid nickname is not a location. Leeds, Hull and York are not one visit.

Finding someone held in Yorkshire

Yorkshire does not publish who is in Leeds, Hull, Doncaster, Wakefield, Full Sutton, New Hall or Wealstun. Use GOV.UK Find a prisoner with name and date of birth. HMPPS confirms a prison only with consent. A Crown Court day in Leeds or Sheffield may be too early for the record. Do not ring Armley or Full Sutton for a name check. A post about a wing is not official. Armley, Full Sutton and Wakefield will not confirm a stranger's name by phone.

Once you have a prison, you still need the number for letters and money. Armley is not Wealstun. New Hall is not Askham Grange. Full Sutton is not York city centre, and it is not Frankland in Durham. If the next result says Manchester, Nottingham or Holme House on Teesside, the Yorkshire plan is over. Ask the solicitor before you send a car to Flockton, Stamford Bridge or Wakefield. New Hall and Askham Grange are different women's bookings near the region.

Visits and family practicalities

Book only for the jail on the result, after you are on the visitor list. Full Sutton and Wakefield visits are not Armley visits. New Hall and Askham Grange do not share a regime. Days live on each GOV.UK page. This guide does not copy them.

Take the photographic ID HMPPS asks for. Phones stay out of the hall. A Doncaster booking will not open Lindholme or Moorland. If a transfer crossed the Pennines overnight, the old slot is dead. Re-check before you leave Leeds, York, Hull or Sheffield.

Getting around Yorkshire

Leeds, York, Hull, Doncaster and Sheffield are the stations that matter. Armley is a Leeds bus, grim and specific, not a mystery tour. Full Sutton is a taxi problem from York via Stamford Bridge, not a walk from the Minster. Wakefield's jail is not the Kirkgate platform. New Hall needs Flockton, off the Huddersfield side. Humber and Millsike need time from Hull.

Drivers use the M1, M62 and A1, then a last mile that looks short and is not. Parking at Armley and Hull is poor. Holderness roads and York ring-road traffic both eat a morning slot. Use the official postcode. Do not follow a pin that swaps Full Sutton for Askham Grange because both sit near York.

Can I search Yorkshire jails for a person's name?
No. Leeds, Hull, Doncaster, Wakefield and Full Sutton are not on a public roll. GOV.UK Find a prisoner may confirm one prison, with the prisoner's consent, after reception.
Is Full Sutton the same as Leeds Armley?
No. Armley is the Leeds local. Full Sutton, east of York, is a high-security dispersal prison. Wakefield is a different high-security jail again. Check the result.
Where do women from Yorkshire actually get held?
Often at New Hall near Flockton, or at Askham Grange if they are in open conditions. HMPPS can also place women outside Yorkshire. The official result is the only address to trust.
