Carinthia: how this area actually works
Steep Alpine-edge valleys, the Drava’s tributaries, and a thin road network. Ravne na Koroškem and Dravograd are as important as the statistical centre. Austria north, Drava and Savinja south. The Austrian Carinthia border is the whole point of the confusion. Koroška is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Carinthia.
Metalworking history in the Mežica valley, small towns, and cross-border life. There is no large city. German is useful and dangerous: it invites people to look up an Austrian Justizanstalt. That is the wrong country. Slovenj Gradec matters here because it is the usual centre of Slovenian Carinthia.
Put Ravne na Koroškem in the plan for a concrete reason — the largest town of the Mežica valley. Dravograd matters here because it is the town where the valley meets the Drava. The administrative centre is Slovenj Gradec. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.
Finding someone held in Carinthia
Local courts sit in the valley towns and feed the national system. Slovenj Gradec is an administrative label as much as a destination. People from Koroška are held in Slovenian institutions — Maribor, Ljubljana, Celje, or Dob — not in Klagenfurt. Confirm the Slovene name of the prison before you search in German. The Slovenian prison administration (URSIKS) does not publish a searchable inmate index. Guessing from news headlines or a shared surname will send you to the wrong gate.
A first arrest in Carinthia can be followed by a transfer to another region if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. Slovenia is small and still splits remand in Ljubljana from the sentenced population at Dob pri Mirni. The statistical region on a form is not the cell. Put Črna na Koroškem in the plan for a concrete reason — a small upper-valley town, not a prison brand.
Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the Slovenian prison administration (URSIKS), those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.
Visits and family practicalities
Obiski are URSIKS rules. An Austrian visitor still needs the Slovenian approval. Children do not bypass identification rules. Check the age and accompaniment conditions on the official page for the specific institution, because they are not uniform across Carinthia. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.
Translating Koroška as Carinthia and driving to Klagenfurt’s prison administration. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Slovenj Gradec, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. Prevalje matters here because it is a border-side town in the same industrial valley.
Getting around Carinthia
Valley roads from Maribor via Dravograd, or from Velenje, are the approaches. They are not motorways. Rail is limited. A car or a pre-booked transfer is the adult plan. Graz or Ljubljana. Klagenfurt is close and still the wrong system if you stop there.
Valley snow comes early. A morning slot in a downhill town is a winter driving problem. Save the gate address in Slovene as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Slovenj Gradec. Austria is the neighbour. Austrian prisons do not hold people for the Republic of Slovenia.
