Mura: how this area actually works
Flat farmland, the Mura river, and borders with Austria, Hungary, and Croatia. The hills of central Slovenia are a rumour from here. Drava lies west. Three countries lie on the other sides. Pomurska is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Mura.
Agriculture, spas, and small industry. Ljutomer and Gornja Radgona are wine and border towns, not capitals. Hungarian is official in part of the region. URSIKS business is Slovene. Murska Sobota matters here because it is the regional town and court centre of Pomurje.
Put Lendava in the plan for a concrete reason — the eastern town in the Hungarian-speaking belt. Ljutomer matters here because it is a wine town toward the Croatian side. The administrative centre is Murska Sobota. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.
Finding someone held in Mura
Courts in Murska Sobota serve the region. A hearing there does not decide that the person sleeps there. There is local custodial capacity associated with the region, but the national sentenced prison is Dob pri Mirni in Southeast Slovenia, and Ljubljana handles much of the remand traffic. Confirm before you book the spa. Name-search sites that scrape court journalism are not the Slovenian prison administration (URSIKS). They miss transfers and they invent certainty. Use the official channel.
A first arrest in Mura can be followed by a transfer to another region if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. Slovenia is small and still splits remand in Ljubljana from the sentenced population at Dob pri Mirni. The statistical region on a form is not the cell. Put Gornja Radgona in the plan for a concrete reason — the border town facing Austria’s Bad Radkersburg.
Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the Slovenian prison administration (URSIKS), those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.
Visits and family practicalities
Obiski are arranged with the institution URSIKS names. A thermal-hotel booking in Moravske Toplice is leisure. The desk compares your document to the approved list letter by letter. If your booking name and your passport diverge — a missing middle name, a transliteration — fix it before you travel to Murska Sobota. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.
Assuming a north-eastern arrest stays in Murska Sobota because the drive to Dob looks long on a Slovenian map. It is still the same small country. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Murska Sobota, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. Moravske Toplice matters here because it is the spa settlement, not a prison.
Getting around Mura
The motorway from Maribor reaches Murska Sobota and continues toward Hungary. It is the easy part. Regional trains link Murska Sobota toward Maribor. Sunday gaps are real. Graz, Zagreb, or Ljubljana can all be the least-bad airport. None is in the region.
Pannonian heat and fog. The plain looks simple and hides long waits at small stations. Save the gate address in Slovene as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Murska Sobota. Austria, Hungary, and Croatia meet this corner. Only URSIKS places people inside Slovenia.
