Lower Sava: how this area actually works
The Sava plain broadens here, with the Gorjanci hills toward Croatia and wine country around Bizeljsko. Southeast Slovenia, Central Sava, Savinja, and Croatia. Posavska is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Lower Sava.
The Krško nuclear plant, agriculture, and the border. The plant’s security regime is not URSIKS. Croatian is understood and is not the language of a Slovenian visit approval. Krško matters here because it is the regional centre and the town people associate with the nuclear plant.
Put Brežice in the plan for a concrete reason — the border town with the castle, paired with Krško. Sevnica matters here because it is an upstream Sava town toward the central valley. The administrative centre is Krško. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.
Finding someone held in Lower Sava
Krško and Brežice are the paired towns of local justice. They are twenty minutes apart and not the same errand as Dob. Dob pri Mirni, in neighbouring Southeast Slovenia, is the prison people from this region often mean. Krško is the energy town. Do not drive to the plant. Name-search sites that scrape court journalism are not the Slovenian prison administration (URSIKS). They miss transfers and they invent certainty. Use the official channel.
A first arrest in Lower Sava can be followed by a transfer to another region if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. Slovenia is small and still splits remand in Ljubljana from the sentenced population at Dob pri Mirni. The statistical region on a form is not the cell. Put Radeče in the plan for a concrete reason — the small town at the region’s upstream end.
Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the Slovenian prison administration (URSIKS), those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.
Visits and family practicalities
Obiski are at the institution on the approval. Brežice’s tourism around the castle is irrelevant. The desk compares your document to the approved list letter by letter. If your booking name and your passport diverge — a missing middle name, a transliteration — fix it before you travel to Krško. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.
Confusing Krško nuclear security with prison security, or confusing Posavje with Southeast Slovenia because Dob is close. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Krško, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. Bizeljsko matters here because it is the wine hills toward the Croatian line, not a gate.
Getting around Lower Sava
The motorway toward Zagreb crosses the region. It is a corridor to Croatia as much as a local road. The line toward Zagreb runs here. Useful for arrival, not for identification. Zagreb Airport can be closer than Ljubljana for this corner. You are still visiting a Slovenian institution.
Summer border traffic toward the coast, via this corridor, is the hidden delay. Save the gate address in Slovene as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Krško. Croatia is across the Sava. Croatian zatvori are a different administration.
