Drava: how this area actually works
The Drava runs through Maribor under the Pohorje massif. Eastward the hills sink toward the Pannonian edge and Ptuj. Mura, Carinthia, Savinja, and Austria across the hills. Podravska is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Drava.
Maribor’s university and industry, Pohorje skiing, and wine on the Slovenske gorice. The city is the whole practical region for most visits. German day-trippers from Austria know the Lent quarter. They do not know URSIKS obiski rules. In Drava, Maribor is the regional city on the Drava and the local prison town.
Ptuj is easy to misread from a distance. Locally it is the oldest documented town in the region, downriver from Maribor. In Drava, Ruše is a town under Pohorje, west of the city. The administrative centre is Maribor. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.
Finding someone held in Drava
Maribor courts serve the region and a wider north-eastern docket. Ptuj has its own historic weight and its own distance. Maribor has a prison serving the region. Dob and Ljubljana remain the national names for longer sentences and capital remand. A Pohorje hotel is a ski choice, not a custody choice. If a website offers a “full inmate list” for this area, it is not the prison service. Slovenia does not run custody like a US county jail blotter.
A first arrest in Drava can be followed by a transfer to another region if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. Slovenia is small and still splits remand in Ljubljana from the sentenced population at Dob pri Mirni. The statistical region on a form is not the cell. Lenart is easy to misread from a distance. Locally it is a small town in the Slovenske gorice.
Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the Slovenian prison administration (URSIKS), those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.
Visits and family practicalities
Obiski follow the institution. Maribor and Ljubljana are two hours apart and legally one system, which is why the paper matters. The desk compares your document to the approved list letter by letter. If your booking name and your passport diverge — a missing middle name, a transliteration — fix it before you travel to Maribor. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.
Driving to Ljubljana by default because English articles barely mention Maribor. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Maribor, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. In Drava, Slovenska Bistrica is the town on the motorway south toward Celje.
Getting around Drava
The A1 motorway links Ljubljana and Maribor and continues toward Hungary. City exits are the part people miss. Maribor is on the main line from Ljubljana toward Graz and Budapest. The station is central enough to tempt a wrong walk. Graz is often the practical airport. Ljubljana is the national one. Maribor’s own field is secondary.
Pohorje snow on one side of the city and valley fog on the other. Pick the forecast for the gate. Save the gate address in Slovene as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Maribor.
