Littoral–Inner Carniola: how this area actually works
Karst poljes, the Postojna gate through the hills, and forests. It is a corridor region more than a city region. Central Slovenia, Gorizia, Coastal–Karst, and Croatia. Primorsko-notranjska is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Littoral–Inner Carniola.
The cave tourism, logistics on the motorway, and small towns. Cerknica and Ilirska Bistrica are the other poles. Italian and Croatian influences arrive with the road to the sea. URSIKS does not. In Littoral–Inner Carniola, Postojna is the regional centre and cave town on the motorway.
Cerknica is easy to misread from a distance. Locally it is the intermittent-lake town north of Postojna. In Littoral–Inner Carniola, Ilirska Bistrica is the southern town toward the Croatian border. The administrative centre is Postojna. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.
Finding someone held in Littoral–Inner Carniola
Court work is local and then national. Postojna is the centre people can find on a map. Expect placement in Ljubljana, Koper, or Dob rather than a cave-town jail. The motorway makes all three reachable and none of them automatic. If a website offers a “full inmate list” for this area, it is not the prison service. Slovenia does not run custody like a US county jail blotter.
A first arrest in Littoral–Inner Carniola can be followed by a transfer to another region if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. Slovenia is small and still splits remand in Ljubljana from the sentenced population at Dob pri Mirni. The statistical region on a form is not the cell. Pivka is easy to misread from a distance. Locally it is a small junction town on the way to the coast.
Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the Slovenian prison administration (URSIKS), those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.
Visits and family practicalities
Obiski follow the institution. A Postojna cave ticket is not a consolation prize if you had the wrong town. Children do not bypass identification rules. Check the age and accompaniment conditions on the official page for the specific institution, because they are not uniform across Littoral–Inner Carniola. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.
Stopping at Postojna because it is the only famous name, when the person is in Koper or the capital. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Postojna, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. In Littoral–Inner Carniola, Logatec is the town on the Ljubljana side of the hills.
Getting around Littoral–Inner Carniola
The A1 motorway from Ljubljana to the coast crosses the region. It is the fastest road in the country and still not a gate. The line to Koper runs here. Postojna station is a real stop. Ljubljana, or Trieste from the Italian side if the institution turns out to be coastal.
Bora wind on the karst and summer tourist queues at the cave. Build slack into a coast-bound day. Save the gate address in Slovene as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Postojna.
