Savinja: how this area actually works
The Celje basin, the Savinja valley toward the Alpine edge, and the Velenje mining hills. The region is central and still hilly. Drava, Carinthia, Upper Carniola, Central Slovenia, Lower Sava, and Central Sava. Savinjska is the name you will see on court stamps, road signs, and the heading of a local letter even when the English page you are reading says Savinja.
Celje’s industry and courts, the coal and industry of Velenje, spas at Laško. Traffic on the A1 is the daily fact. Celje is a count’s town in the schoolbooks and a working city on a visit day. The old castle is not the gate. People heading for Celje still need Celje on the list: the regional city, court centre, and local prison town.
Velenje is the mining and industrial town in the hills north of Celje. People heading for Celje still need Žalec on the list: the hop-growing town immediately west of Celje. The administrative centre is Celje. That city is where regional offices cluster; it is not automatically where a sentenced or remanded person is held.
Finding someone held in Savinja
Celje courts are among the busiest outside the capital. Velenje and Žalec have their own local life. Celje has a prison. Dob pri Mirni, over the hills in Southeast Slovenia, is the national sentenced institution many Celje cases eventually mean. Do not merge the two towns. There is no public roster you can query on gov.si. Placement is an administrative fact, released to the people entitled to it, not a webpage.
A first arrest in Savinja can be followed by a transfer to another region if security category, sentence length, medical needs, or simple capacity require it. Slovenia is small and still splits remand in Ljubljana from the sentenced population at Dob pri Mirni. The statistical region on a form is not the cell. Laško is the spa town south of Celje on the Savinja.
Keep the case number, the court, and any reference the lawyer used. When you contact the Slovenian prison administration (URSIKS), those details do more work than a date of birth alone. Letters from the institution, even short ones, usually name the facility more reliably than a relative’s memory of the police station.
Visits and family practicalities
Obiski at Celje and obiski at Dob are different approvals and different valleys. Children do not bypass identification rules. Check the age and accompaniment conditions on the official page for the specific institution, because they are not uniform across Savinja. Rules on property, cash, clothing, and how many people may attend are set for each institution and change; copy them from the current official page rather than from a forum post about last year.
Leaving the motorway at Celje because the region is named Savinja, when the person was moved to Dob or to Ljubljana months ago. If you are travelling from abroad, assume the visit is not a same-day add-on to a flight. Approval, the journey from Celje, and the time spent at the gate rarely fit between a morning landing and an evening departure. People heading for Celje still need Šentjur on the list: a town east of Celje on the way toward Rogaška.
Getting around Savinja
The A1 Ljubljana–Maribor motorway passes Celje. Laško and the valley roads are a separate exit. Celje is a main-line station. That makes the city easy and the surrounding prisons only slightly less easy. Ljubljana is the nearest serious airport, under an hour when the motorway behaves.
Basin fog in Celje is famous. It delays the last kilometres more than the motorway forecast admits. Save the gate address in Slovene as well as English, and carry a paper copy. Rural approaches to institutions are often poorly labelled for visitors who only followed a motorway sign into Celje.
