Baden-Württemberg prisons: JVA visits and Land Auskunft

Baden-Württemberg runs its own prisons from Stuttgart, not from Berlin and not from Munich. Stammheim, Bruchsal, Freiburg and the houses toward Konstanz and the Rhine are Land establishments. There is no national inmate search. A family asks this Land's Justizvollzug, and a Berlin office will not answer for a Stuttgart file.

Baden-Württemberg: how this area actually works

Stuttgart is the capital, and JVA Stuttgart-Stammheim, in the north of the city, is the high-security name people still type first. It is not a city-centre walk from the Hauptbahnhof, and it is not the same booking as a remand house elsewhere in the Land. Karlsruhe and Mannheim sit on the Rhine-Neckar corridor, with their own courts and their own reasons to leave the Stuttgart basin. Freiburg and the Breisgau look toward France and Switzerland. Konstanz looks across the lake. Heimsheim and Bruchsal, the latter a fortress-style house on the Saalbach, fill out a map that is easy to flatten into one 'south-west jail' and then miss the gate.

Justizvollzug is a Land power. Baden-Württemberg's ministry and its Anstalten do not share a roster with Bavaria or with Rhineland-Palatinate. Untersuchungshaft, the remand stage, can restrict letters and visits through the court or the prosecutor. Strafhaft, after sentence, follows the Land's prison rules instead. Offener Vollzug and geschlossener Vollzug are different regimes. A person arrested at a Stuttgart Amtsgericht can still be moved to Bruchsal, Freiburg or another Land when security or space requires it. Families do not choose the house. A Karlsruhe remand is not a promise of a cell in Stammheim.

This page groups prisons recorded as Baden-Württemberg. It does not list who is inside Stammheim, Bruchsal or any other JVA. Inspection reports discuss buildings and conditions, not a daily nominal roll. Cross-border relatives in Strasbourg, Basel or Colmar still need German procedure if the person is held on this side of the Rhine. A French permis de visite is the wrong form. Read the establishment notice the Land publishes, and do not invent a visiting hour from a Berlin or Munich example. Mannheim and Freiburg families should read the notice for their own Anstalt.

Finding someone held in Baden-Württemberg

Germany does not publish a searchable list of people in Baden-Württemberg prisons. Auskunft goes to this Land's prison administration, usually in writing, and only on the terms that Land sets. A Berlin Zentrale Auskunftsstelle will not tell you whether someone is in Stammheim or Bruchsal. The defence lawyer at the Landgericht in Stuttgart, Karlsruhe or Freiburg often hears the first placement before the family does. A same-day arrest may still be in police custody, which is not a JVA. Stammheim will not confirm a stranger's name.

If a letter already names an Anstalt, use that name and any prisoner number it carries. Stammheim, Bruchsal, Freiburg, Heimsheim and Konstanz are different addresses. A rumour that someone 'went to Stuttgart' might mean the court, the remand house or Stammheim's high-security regime. Do not pay a website that claims a Germany-wide inmate search. When the file moves to Bavaria or Hesse, the Baden-Württemberg desk is the wrong door. Konstanz, Freiburg and Heimsheim are separate bookings from Bruchsal and from Stammheim.

Visits and family practicalities

A visit in this Land needs permission from the establishment, and remand visits may also need the court. Stammheim's security process is not a Freiburg local visit, and Bruchsal is not Konstanz. Session lengths are on the Land or JVA notice. This guide does not invent a timetable for Stuttgart or Mannheim.

Bring the identification the Anstalt lists. Phones and most bags stay out. Approval for one house does not work at another if the person moved overnight from Karlsruhe toward the Black Forest or the other way. Re-check the address before you buy an ICE ticket to Stuttgart or Freiburg.

Getting around Baden-Württemberg

Stuttgart Airport and Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport are the air heads. ICE runs the Rhine and the Neckar. Stammheim is a northern Stuttgart district reached by tram and bus, not a five-minute walk from the Hauptbahnhof. Bruchsal is an S-Bahn or regional stop plus a walk or taxi to the JVA. Freiburg's old town is not the prison gate.

Drivers crossing from Alsace or from Basel should leave slack at the border approaches and still follow the German postcode on the official page. Black Forest roads in winter are a different problem from the Rhine plain. Parking at urban houses is tight. Do not navigate to the Justizministerium and expect a visiting hall.

Questions families actually ask

Can I search Baden-Württemberg inmates online?
No. Stuttgart, Bruchsal and Freiburg have no public roll. Ask this Land's Justizvollzug. A Berlin or Bavarian office will not confirm a Baden-Württemberg file.
Is Stammheim the only prison in the Land?
No. Stammheim is the high-security house in northern Stuttgart. Bruchsal, Freiburg, Heimsheim, Konstanz and other Anstalten are separate gates. The letter names one of them.
Will a Stuttgart arrest stay in Stuttgart?
Not always. Remand may start locally, then the Land can move someone to another JVA in Baden-Württemberg or, by agreement, elsewhere. Confirm the Anstalt before you travel.
