Brandenburg: how this area actually works
JVA Brandenburg-Görden, at Brandenburg an der Havel, is the heavy historic house on this map. It is not a Potsdam afternoon and not a Berlin S-Bahn stop. Cottbus and the Drahnsdorf side of that search sit in the south-east, toward the Spreewald. Luckau-Duben is another Land site families mix into a single 'east of Berlin' pin. Frankfurt (Oder) is the Polish-border city, with its own court traffic and its own reason not to assume Görden. Neuruppin and the north-west of the Land are a different regional-rail problem again. The capital at Potsdam is where the ministry sits, not an automatic prison gate.
Heidering at Großbeeren is the trap. The soil is Brandenburg, but the establishment is widely handled as part of Berlin's custody system. A family who writes only to Potsdam, or only to Berlin, can miss the file. Ask which administration holds it. Other houses, Görden included, are Brandenburg Justiz. Remand restrictions come from the court. Sentenced placement can still leave the Land when a specialist regime does not exist in a thinly spread estate. Polish relatives crossing at Frankfurt (Oder) need German visitor rules, not a Warsaw locator. Potsdam is the capital, not the cell.
This page groups prisons recorded as Brandenburg. It does not name the people at Görden, Cottbus or Luckau. Berlin overflow is a story you confirm, not a rumour you navigate by. Distances around the Berliner Ring look small until a visit slot and a regional train disagree. Read the Land's notice for the Anstalt you were given. Do not reuse Tegel's or Moabit's visiting pattern for a Havel town. Cottbus, Luckau and Brandenburg an der Havel are three trains from Berlin, not one S-Bahn. Frankfurt (Oder) is a fourth. Read the notice for that town.
Finding someone held in Brandenburg
Brandenburg publishes no prisoner index. Auskunft is a request to this Land's Justizvollzug, on its terms, not a Google search and not Berlin's Zentrale Auskunftsstelle unless the establishment really is a Berlin house such as the Heidering question. The lawyer at the Landgericht in Potsdam, Cottbus or Frankfurt (Oder) is the practical first call. Police custody is not Görden. Do not expect the gate to search a name for a stranger. Görden will not confirm a caller, and neither will a Cottbus gate.
Match the town on the letter. Brandenburg an der Havel is not the Land as a whole, and it is not Potsdam. Cottbus is not Luckau. If the person is at Tegel or Moabit, you are in Berlin. If papers say Görden, stay with Brandenburg. A move to Saxony or Berlin-city establishments makes the old plan wrong. Ignore paid 'German inmate' sites. Potsdam, Cottbus and Brandenburg an der Havel are three different replies. Heidering is the extra trap. Confirm it before you write to Potsdam.
Visits and family practicalities
Visits are approved by the Brandenburg establishment, with the court involved on many remand cases. Görden's regime is not a Cottbus visit and not a Berlin-Tegel visit. This page does not invent hours for the Havel or the Spreewald edge. Read the Land notice before you leave.
Bring the identification the house demands. A permission for one Anstalt dies if the person moved overnight to Berlin or to another Brandenburg town. Re-check before you take the RE from Berlin Hauptbahnhof or a car out to Frankfurt (Oder).
Getting around Brandenburg
Potsdam Hauptbahnhof and the RE lines that ring Berlin are the usual approaches, then a further leg. Görden is a Brandenburg an der Havel transport problem, not a Wannsee walk. Cottbus is a long regional ride to the south-east. Frankfurt (Oder) is the border station. Großbeeren, if the file really is Heidering, is a short hop that is still outside the city fare logic some visitors assume.
Drivers using the Berliner Ring should leave slack for the last kilometres off the autobahn. Winter fog on the Havel and single-track patience on branch lines both eat a morning slot. Parking in the small towns is not a Berlin car park. Use the official address, not a pin dropped on the Potsdam ministry.
