Mecklenburg-Vorpommern: how this area actually works
Schwerin is the capital, a lake town west of the prison names people actually search. JVA Bützow is the heavy house, a small-town station between Rostock and Schwerin rather than a city campus. Waldeck and Neustrelitz appear on the same Land map and are not interchangeable with Bützow. Rostock and Stralsund take the coast. Neubrandenburg and Greifswald have their own court towns. Rügen and Usedom do not contain a substitute for the mainland JVA. A family in Binz who thinks the prison is 'on the island somewhere' is reading a holiday map.
The estate cannot hold every regime. Specialist, medical or high-security placements often leave for another Land. That transfer is decided by the administrations, not by a relative who would rather visit Rostock than a town further south. Remand restrictions come from the court in Schwerin, Rostock or Stralsund. Sentenced rules are the Land's. This is not Hamburg's city-state system and not Berlin's. Polish border traffic at the east of the Land still needs German Auskunft if the person is held in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Rostock, Stralsund and Schwerin do not share one reception desk.
This page groups prisons recorded under this Land's name. It does not list people at Bützow, Waldeck or Neustrelitz. Distances on the Baltic plain look empty and then consume a day. Winter wind is a scheduling fact. Read the Anstalt notice you were given. Do not copy a Hamburg Fuhlsbüttel routine onto a Mecklenburg town because both are 'the north'. Bützow, Waldeck and Neustrelitz each have their own notice. A ferry to Rügen is not a shortcut to any of them. Neubrandenburg and Greifswald are court towns with their own possible transfers.
Finding someone held in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
There is no public roll for Bützow or any other house in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Ask this Land's Justizvollzug. Berlin's Auskunftsstelle and Hamburg's city desk do not hold the file unless a transfer has already moved the person. The lawyer in Schwerin or Rostock is the usual first confirmation. Police cells in a coastal town are not the JVA. Do not expect a gate in Bützow to search a name for a caller. Waldeck and Neustrelitz will not either. Wait until reception has finished.
Quote the establishment on the letter. Bützow is not Waldeck and not Neustrelitz. If the paper later says Tegel, Billwerder or a Brandenburg house, change Land. A rumour from a Rostock courtroom is a prompt to ask officially, not an address. Paid national search sites are not the procedure in this Land. Schwerin is the capital, not a default cell, and a Rostock arrest can still mean Bützow. Stralsund is not that town either. Neustrelitz is a third possibility on the plain.
Visits and family practicalities
Permission comes from the establishment, and remand often needs the court as well. A Bützow visit is not a Waldeck visit. This page does not invent hours for Schwerin or Rostock. Read the Land notice before you leave Berlin, Hamburg or a ferry port.
Bring the identification required. Phones stay outside. If the person has been moved out of the Land, a local approval is useless. Re-check before you commit to a regional train that runs every two hours across the plain.
Getting around Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
Rostock, Schwerin and Bützow's small station are the regional pattern. Long-distance arrivals often use Berlin, Hamburg or Lübeck, then a thin RE. Bützow is a walk or taxi from that station, not a Rostock tram. Stralsund and the islands add a coast leg that will not match a tight slot.
Drivers on the A20 and A19 should treat single-lane approaches and winter closures as normal. Ferries to Rügen are irrelevant unless the official address is actually there, which the main houses are not. Use the Land's postcode. Do not end the day at Schwerin castle because it was the capital on the sign.
