Hesse: how this area actually works
JVA Frankfurt am Main I at Preungesheim is the large men's house families mean by a Frankfurt jail. The women's side of the Frankfurt story is a separate regime, not a casual add-on to the men's visit. Weiterstadt, near Darmstadt, and Butzbach, north of Frankfurt, are sentenced and specialist names that people collapse into 'somewhere by the airport'. Kassel-Wehlheiden serves the north of the Land. Wiesbaden, the capital, is a court and ministry city across the Rhine from Mainz, which is already Rhineland-Palatinate. Those are Länder-edges if you are careless: Hesse one side of the Rhine, Rhineland-Palatinate on the other.
Hessian prison rules are not Bavarian and not North Rhine-Westphalian. Remand at a Frankfurt court can restrict contact. After sentence, the Land may move someone from Preungesheim to Weiterstadt, Butzbach, Kassel or another Land. Offenbach and Hanau feed the same Rhine-Main machine and still do not guarantee a Preungesheim cell. Gießen and Marburg sit on the north-south rail line with their own court towns. A Darmstadt arrest is not a Wiesbaden rumour you can settle on a search engine. Gießen and Kassel are further separate court towns with their own possible gates.
This page groups prisons recorded as Hesse. It does not list people at Preungesheim, Weiterstadt or Kassel. Airport arrests and federal police holding rooms are not the JVA. Read the Hessian notice for the named Anstalt. Do not borrow a Berlin visit length or a Mainz address because the map of the Rhein-Main region looks like one metro. Preungesheim, Weiterstadt, Butzbach and Kassel-Wehlheiden are four journeys. Wiesbaden's ministry is not a visiting hall. Offenbach and Hanau can feed the same courts and still not mean Preungesheim. Check the letter in Frankfurt.
Finding someone held in Hesse
Hesse does not publish who is in Preungesheim, Weiterstadt, Butzbach or Kassel. Auskunft goes to Hessian Justizvollzug on its terms. The lawyer at the Landgericht in Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, Darmstadt or Kassel usually hears the placement first. Do not call a Preungesheim gate and ask for a name. Police custody at the airport is not the prison. A same-day remand may not be in the JVA yet. Preungesheim will not confirm a stranger's name at the gate. Weiterstadt will not either.
The letter's Anstalt name matters. Frankfurt I is not Weiterstadt, and Kassel is not Butzbach. If the next paper says Mainz, Diez or Stammheim, you have left Hesse. Start with that Land's desk. Ignore sites that sell a single German inmate search. They are not how Wiesbaden's administration works. Frankfurt, Darmstadt and Kassel files are Hessian only until a transfer letter says otherwise. Match Weiterstadt against Preungesheim before you move. Kassel-Wehlheiden is a northern journey, not a Rhine-Main tram. Confirm Butzbach too.
Visits and family practicalities
You need the Hessian establishment's permission, and often the court's if the person is on remand. Preungesheim is not a Weiterstadt visit and not a Kassel day. This page does not invent hours for Frankfurt or Wiesbaden. Read the Land page before you leave the airport.
Bring the identification listed. Phones stay outside. A booking for one Rhine-Main house fails at the next if there was a transfer overnight. Re-check before you ride the U-Bahn to Preungesheim or a regional train toward Butzbach and Gießen.
Getting around Hesse
Frankfurt Airport is close on a map and still usually two transfers from Preungesheim. The U-Bahn to Preungesheim plus a walk is the city method. Wiesbaden Hauptbahnhof serves the capital and is the wrong terminus for a Frankfurt jail. Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe is the north. Darmstadt and Weiterstadt are a south-of-the-airport problem, not a terminal walk.
Drivers on the A5 and A3 should leave the autobahn time and the last mile separately. Parking in north Frankfurt is poor. Mainz visitors crossing the Rhine are already flirting with the wrong Land if the letter says Diez or Rohrbach. Use the Hessian postcode on the official page.
