Bavaria: how this area actually works
Munich is the capital families fly into, and JVA München at Stadelheim in Giesing is the house they mean when they say the city jail. It sits with the court district in people's minds and still is not the Hauptbahnhof. Nuremberg and Augsburg run their own court diaries in Middle Franconia and Swabia. Würzburg and Bayreuth pull the north of the Land. Straubing, in Lower Bavaria, is the high-security name that is not a Munich U-Bahn trip. Kaisheim and Landsberg appear in the same Bavarian chain, along with smaller Anstalten and Außenstellen. Flattening all of that into 'Munich prison' is how visits fail.
Bavarian prison law is not North Rhine-Westphalia's and not Baden-Württemberg's. A Munich prosecutor will not confirm a Cologne file, and a Cologne office will not confirm Stadelheim. Remand can limit contact until the court says otherwise. After sentence, the Land places people by security, programme and space, including moves from a city house to Straubing or to an open unit. Alpine and forest Außenstellen are not city remand. Austrian relatives in Salzburg or Kufstein are still dealing with German rules if the person is held in Bavaria. Schengen does not waive the gate.
This page groups prisons recorded as Bavaria. It is not a nominal roll of Stadelheim, Nuremberg or Straubing. Population figures, where an official page gives them, describe an institution. They are not names. If the paperwork later shows a Baden-Württemberg or Saxon Anstalt, the Bavarian travel plan is over. Read the notice for the house you were actually given, and do not copy a visiting length from another Land's website. Munich, Nuremberg and Straubing publish their own notices. A Giesing rumour is not a Lower Bavaria address, and Augsburg is another court town.
Finding someone held in Bavaria
There is no Bavarian inmate website and no German national one. Written Auskunft goes to Bavaria's prison administration on the terms it publishes. The lawyer at the Landgericht in Munich, Nuremberg or Augsburg is often first to learn which JVA took the person. Police cells overnight are not Stadelheim. Do not ring a gate in Giesing or Straubing and expect a name to be read out. A press report about a trial is not a placement. Stadelheim and Straubing will not read a roll to a caller.
Use the Anstalt name on the letter. Stadelheim is not Straubing, and neither is Kaisheim or Landsberg. A 'Munich' rumour can mean the court on the Nymphenburger side of life or the prison in Giesing. If the file moves to Hesse or Baden-Württemberg, start again with that Land. Private sites that promise a Germany-wide booking log are not the Bavarian procedure. Kaisheim and Landsberg are not Munich day trips. Match the town before you leave the Hauptbahnhof. Würzburg is not Nuremberg.
Visits and family practicalities
Permission comes from the Bavarian establishment, and remand visits may need the court as well. Stadelheim's process is not an open-unit visit and not Straubing's high-security routine. This page does not invent hours for Munich, Nuremberg or Würzburg. Read the live Land notice before you travel.
Identification is checked. Phones stay out of the hall. A visit approved for Augsburg will not open Stadelheim if the person has moved. Re-check the Anstalt before you commit to a flight into Munich or a train to Regensburg and Straubing.
Getting around Bavaria
Munich Airport and the Hauptbahnhof serve the south. Nuremberg's airport and station serve the north of the Land. Stadelheim is a U-Bahn plus a walk in Giesing, unpleasant in January and not the Marienplatz. Straubing is a regional ride east of Regensburg, then a local leg. Alpine houses need a car and a weather plan.
Drivers from Austria should not treat the border as the end of the journey. Parking at city JVAs is scarce. ICE through Ingolstadt or Augsburg looks fast until the last taxi. Use the official address. Do not navigate to the Justizpalast and hope the prison is next door.
