Saxony-Anhalt: how this area actually works
Magdeburg, on the Elbe, is the capital. Halle is the southern city that shares an airport with Leipzig and therefore collects lost visitors who are actually due in Saxony. Dessau-Roßlau and Wittenberg sit on the Elbe as well, with their own court towns. JVA Burg is the big modern establishment east of Magdeburg, a regional stop rather than a capital tram. Halle's house and Magdeburg's take the city court load. Volkstedt is another name on the Land map and not a nickname for Burg. None of these is Bautzen, Waldheim or Dresden.
Saxon and Saxon-Anhalt files are different desks. A Magdeburg prosecutor does not confirm a Leipzig prison, and Dresden does not confirm Burg. Remand limits come from the court. Sentenced placement can move someone between Halle, Magdeburg and Burg, or out to Saxony, Brandenburg or Thuringia. Brandenburg's Görden is the other confusion, because both are 'east of a bigger city' in sloppy directions. Berlin's Ring is not this Land either, though ICE trains make it feel close. Dessau and Wittenberg are Elbe towns, not Burg and not Halle's gate. Volkstedt is separate again.
This page groups prisons recorded as Saxony-Anhalt. It does not list people at Burg, Halle or Magdeburg. Read the Land notice for the named Anstalt. Do not apply a Saxon visiting pattern from Leipzig because the airport is shared. Do not treat a historical pamphlet about the Elbe as a location check. Burg, Halle and Magdeburg each publish their own notice. Volkstedt is not a nickname for any of them. Leipzig's prisons are across the border in Saxony, whatever the shared airport suggests. Do not cross by accident. Halle is this Land.
Finding someone held in Saxony-Anhalt
Saxony-Anhalt publishes no inmate roll. Ask this Land's Justiz, usually through the route published for Magdeburg's administration. Saxony's desk will not answer for Burg or Halle. The lawyer in Magdeburg or Halle usually knows the first house. Do not phone the gate for a name. Police cells are not the JVA. A search result that only says 'Sachsen' is incomplete. Burg and Halle will not read a nominal roll down the phone. Magdeburg's ministry is not the gate. Ask in writing.
Use the establishment on the letter. Burg is not Magdeburg city. Halle is not Leipzig. Volkstedt is not Bautzen. If the paper moves the person to Saxony, Brandenburg or Thuringia, change Land before you travel. Paid Germany-wide inmate pages are not this procedure. Dessau and Wittenberg are not Burg. If the letter says Leipzig or Dresden, you are in Saxony. Brandenburg's Görden is another wrong turn from the Berlin ICE. Stay with the town printed on the Saxony-Anhalt letter. Burg included.
Visits and family practicalities
Permission is for one Anstalt in this Land, and remand may need the court. Burg's process is not Halle's and not a Dresden visit. This guide does not invent hours for Magdeburg. Read the notice on the day you go.
Bring the identification required. Phones stay outside. An approval for Halle will not open Burg. Re-check if a transfer toward Saxony was rumoured overnight, before you leave the Leipzig/Halle airport or Magdeburg Hauptbahnhof.
Getting around Saxony-Anhalt
Leipzig/Halle Airport confuses everyone. Halle's JVA is a Halle trip. Leipzig's prisons are Saxony. Magdeburg Hauptbahnhof is the capital station. Burg is an east-of-Magdeburg regional stop plus a local leg. Dessau is a different Elbe town. Wittenberg is not the prison by default.
Drivers on the A2 and A14 should leave slack after the exit. Parking is limited. ICE passengers heading Berlin–Frankfurt often overshoot Magdeburg in their planning and then rush the last mile. Use the official postcode. Do not follow a pin into Görden or Dresden.
