Schleswig-Holstein: how this area actually works
JVA Kiel and JVA Lübeck are city houses, not a shared campus. Neumünster sits on the Hamburg–Flensburg rail spine and is the town many transfers pass through in conversation. Itzehoe serves the west toward the North Sea. Flensburg is the Danish border city. The islands, Fehmarn and the North Frisian coast, are travel problems rather than a second prison service. Lübeck's JVA is a city-north site, easy to confuse with the old town and the port. None of these is Fuhlsbüttel, Billwerder or Hahnöfersand. Flensburg is the border city, not a Kiel visiting room.
Hamburg's city-state Justizvollzug does not answer a Kiel file, and this Land does not answer a Hamburg one, unless a transfer letter says the person moved. Danish relatives from Sønderborg or Kolding need German Auskunft and German visit permission if the person is held in Schleswig-Holstein. A Danish Kriminalforsorgen form is the wrong document. Remand limits come from the court in Kiel, Lübeck or Flensburg. Sentenced placement can leave the Land for Hamburg or Lower Saxony when the regime requires it. Itzehoe, on the west coast, is not a Kiel afternoon.
This page groups prisons recorded as Schleswig-Holstein. It does not list people in Kiel, Lübeck, Neumünster or Itzehoe. Ferry traffic to Denmark is not a visitors' centre. Read the Land notice for the named house. Do not copy a Hamburg timetable onto a Baltic address because the airport you used was Hamburg's. Kiel, Lübeck, Neumünster and Itzehoe each have their own notice. Fehmarn ferry traffic is not a visitors' centre. Flensburg families still need this Land's notice, not a Danish prison page. Lübeck's old town is not the gate. Kiel's is not either until the letter says so.
Finding someone held in Schleswig-Holstein
Schleswig-Holstein publishes no prisoner roll. Ask this Land's Justizvollzug. Hamburg's desk is the wrong door unless the establishment is actually in Hamburg. The lawyer in Kiel or Lübeck usually knows the first placement. Do not ring the gate for a name. Police custody in Flensburg is not the JVA. A Danish news item is not a German location. The Kiel and Lübeck gates will not confirm a stranger's name. Use the Land route after reception has finished. Neumünster will not either.
Match the city on the letter. Kiel is not Lübeck. Neumünster is not Itzehoe. If the paper says Fuhlsbüttel or Billwerder, switch to the Hamburg page. If it says Celle or Oldenburg, switch to Lower Saxony. Paid national search sites are not how Kiel's administration works. Neumünster and Itzehoe are not Lübeck, and Flensburg is not Sønderborg on the Danish side. A Hamburg airport arrival does not make the person a Hamburg prisoner. Read Kiel against Lübeck before you book.
Visits and family practicalities
Permission is issued by the establishment, and remand often needs the court. A Kiel visit is not a Lübeck visit and not a Hamburg one. This guide does not invent hours. Read the Land notice before you leave the station.
Bring the identification required. Phones stay outside. Danish visitors use the same gate rules as anyone else once the person is in this Land. Re-check the Anstalt before you board a train north from Hamburg Hauptbahnhof.
Getting around Schleswig-Holstein
Hamburg Airport is the practical long-haul gate, then an RE north. Kiel and Lübeck have their own Hauptbahnhöfe. Neumünster is the mid-spine stop. Flensburg is the border. Fehmarn ferry traffic does not end at a prison visitors' room. Itzehoe is a west-coast branch, not the Kiel ferry terminal.
Drivers on the A7 and A1 should separate harbour congestion in Hamburg from the Land itself. Parking at the city houses is tight. Wind on the Baltic side delays buses. Use the official address. Do not finish at the Hamburg Landungsbrücken.
